Met Police staff to go on strike

Metropolitan Police Service staff have voted to go on strike in reaction to a below inflation pay rise.
According to the Public and Commercial Services union, up to 9,000 of its members are planning to strike on Wednesday 12 March. Seventy per cent of staff, including Police Community Support Officers, traffic wardens and 999 operators, all voted in favour of the one-day strike.
Two hundred police stations across 32 boroughs will be hit.
Metropolitan Police Service HR director Martin Tiplady was in talks with the union last night (Wednesday) in a bid to come to a compromise.
“While we remain keen to avert industrial action, we are putting in place contingency plans to make sure that critical roles are filled by police officers should the need arise,” says Tiplady. “We do not know how many members may participate in the proposed industrial action, but we anticipate it may involve a relatively small percentage of staff.”
Employees have been offered a 2.5% pay rise, which falls well below the retail price index measure of inflation (4.1%) that the unions use.
