Almost half (47%) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are considering implementing flexible working to maintain growth and reduce costs during the economic downturn.

According to Vanson Bourne, which surveyed 500 SMEs on behalf of T-Mobile, this is because 47% are feeling more pressurised by staff to allow them to work flexibly than they were two years ago.

Among the SMEs that participated 84% believe technology is becoming more important in a slowing economy but less than half (49%) think their mobile communications technology gives them adequate flexibility to react to the economic downturn.

Businessman and star of BBC Dragons' Den James Caan said: "In my experience, mobile working has an extremely positive impact, not just in terms of performance and productivity of my team, but also in attracting and retaining excellent people. Mobile technology allows me to keep in contact with their progress and also means I am always available should they need support or advice."
