No compulsory retirement age for civil servants

The Cabinet Office has announced plans to remove the mandatory retirement age across the Civil Service.

The policy will change by 2012.

In light of the recent news a senior adviser to the European Court of Justice advised UK employers should be allowed to force staff to retire aged 65, Catharine Pusey, director of the Employers Forum on Age (EFA), hopes other employers will follow the Civil Service's example.

She said: "The EFA has been working with a growing number of enlightened employers who have chosen not to use the default age but instead allow employees to retire when it suits both parties. Far from being a burden, this new flexibility has resulted in significant business benefits; filling gaps and keeping valuable members of their workforce."
